History of Arena Cemetery
The oldest headstone found in the Arena cemetery is that of Margaret Henderson,
wife of Hugh Henderson, who was born in 1790 and died in 1848...the year Wisconsin became a state.
There are over 1,500 people buried in the cemetery located on Hwy. 14.
All of the headstones in the Arena Cemetery have been photographed and are available upon request.
There are men who served in seven different wars represented by the burials. One young man from the
Civil War was only 17 when he died at Camp Randall.
The Arena Cemetery Association graciously gave permission for work on all damaged stones over 100 years old.
In 2006, new bases were installed under twelve stones that had fallen and were in disrepair. Over 30 tilted
stones were repaired and once again are standing up straight. The work is ongoing, and with funds received
for copies of photos, obituaries, service information, etc., the work will continue. Many people have contributed
by loaning scrapbooks, copies of early cemetery lists, church members pamphlets of the village churches, Arena
school booklet, information from the Iowa County History of Arena 1881, and much more. These contributions have
been a tremendous help in compiling information on the people buried in the cemetery. Before and after photos of
headstones that were repaired are also available upon request.
